"Careers for the Future" Summer Medical Camps

Triage Workers These health careers education camps give high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to learn first-hand about a variety of medical professions and what it takes to be in them.

Migrant Farm Worker Health Project (1 week camp - $50)

Requires a Letter of Recommendation and an Interview in addition to application.
During this one week opportunity with the UConn School of Medicine, participants shadow medical students and volunteer with health care providers at local migrant farm workers camps. Students assist with field clinic set-up and breakdown, intake, general health assessments and translation assistance. The sessions run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the camps as well as Monday and Friday morning our offices.

Hospital Camps (Locations TBA) (4 week camp - $200)

Requires a Letter of Recommendation and an Interview in addition to application.
Students are offered the opportunity to see first-hand the “hard and soft” skills necessary to become part of a medical team. During the first week, students are prepared to enter the hospital and are given an overview of careers in healthcare. During weeks two through four, students shadow medical professionals onsite at a hospital in various areas including outpatient surgery, primary care and wound care. The program takes place Mondays through Fridays for four weeks.

Diseases, Disasters, and Environmental Determinants: Factors in Public Health (2 week camp - $100)

This program provides students with the opportunity to learn about issues and careers in public health in a hands-on activities environment. Topics include epidemiology, water quality and environmental factors, community health hazards, healthcare legislation, and an emergency preparedness overview. Students use computer simulation games, interact with guest presenters, and create service learning projects where they go out into the community to educate people about public health.

Forensic Science Camp (2 week camp - $100

During this two week program students will get a glimpse into some of the different fields of forensic sciences through activities such as mock crime scenes, the history of forensic sciences, evidence analysis, and CSI videos/reflections. The program will take place Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 12 pm.

Emergency Preparedness Boot Camp (1 week camp - $50)

Provides an introduction to emergency preparedness in a boot camp environment. Students learn what to do in active shooter situations, natural disasters, and medical emergencies. Students become First Aid and CPR/AED certified, learn how to build their own emergency preparedness kits, create personalized emergency plans, and learn about careers in the field of emergency response.

NEW - Health Science and Technology Camp (1 week camp - $50)

Scheduled to meet on-site at University of Hartford, this camp provides an introduction to healthcare through health science and health-related technology. Anticipated topics are Body Mechanics, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, Prosthetics and Orthotics, and Engineering. Students will observe providers at work and are exposed to careers and in the medical and allied health fields.
