Mobile Health Van

In partnership with the City of Hartford, Central AHEC provides basic health screenings using a Mobile Van targeting "hot spots" - or areas where high volumes of drug sales, drug use, and prostitution occur. This has proven to be an effective way for us to access high-risk populations.
The van is staffed by a primary care nurse and substance abuse counselor who provide needed services. The primary health focus is on early screening. However, the Central AHEC nurse also provides hypertension and diabetes screening, wound care and medical referrals for follow-up services. The substance abuse counselor does an initial assessment and referrals for treatment options.
Health Disparity
There's a tremendous disparity among the racial and ethnic groups diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. According to a 2005 comprehensive study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 49 percent of the people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS were black, 31 percent white, 18 percent Hispanic, 2 percent Asian/Pacific Islanders and American Indian/Alaska Natives.
