Emergency Medical Technician Training

This program was created by Central AHEC, Inc. to provide a pathway for African Americans and Latinos/Latinas living in the Greater Hartford Area to enter the workforce as trained EMTs and to build a diverse community of health care providers.
This is a comprehensive training program that includes career-readiness preparation through Central AHEC, EMT training through Hartford Hospital EMS Education Department, and student mentoring from workers in allied health fields.
2010 was the pilot year showing much success graduating 17 students. The 2011 season graduated 18 students and we look forward to the success of 2012.

| Success Stories |
My name is Kevin Coleman and I am a success story. It all started with my introduction to AHEC and this wide-eyed woman from California. As I began my studies for my certification as an EMT-B, she encouraged me and supported me throughout my four and a half months of study and practicals.
Along with another great instructor Mrs. Haaga I was able to take and pass my State clinicals, passing all six stations, and moving onto the National Registry for Emergency Medical Technicians or NREMT, where I went on to pass the nationals as well. I am excited to say that I am now volunteering at Bloomfield Volunteer Ambulance for the city of Bloomfield as well as helping out with their school to train other EMT-B hopefuls.
AHEC and CCC helped me to fulfill my dreams and helped to direct me in the field I have always wanted to be in but didn’t know where to start. Now that I am here I plan to pursue my certification as a paramedic, and respiratory therapist and fly with life star one day. Thank you for everything it was worth the hard work. |

Charrise Hamilton's Testimonial:
As a former student of the Central AHEC EMT program, I have found that in less than 2 years it has helped me to gain a very promising and rewarding position that I never dreamed or before going through the program. I have always wanted to get into the public service/medical field to become an EMT. Until this program came along I didn't know if that would be possible. I was always in some way going to continue in my career path but Central AHEC has put me that much closer. By being involved in the program, I have become an EMT-B and am currently with the Bloomfield Volunteer Ambulance Service. I just recently became a 911 dispatcher with the Newington Police Department which might not have become possible if it weren't for my instruction and assistance from the Central AHEC program. By going through this program I was able to become a volunteer EMT in Bloomfield and make connections with persons who were able to give me good insight when applying for this position. Everything came at the right time and in the right order. The current police chief just so happens to be the former police chief of the Bloomfield Police Dept. and the Bloomfield Volunteer Ambulance service is one of the only ambulance services that work directly with the police dept. It was a long road (it seemed) for me to get to this point and I don't plan to stop continuing forward in my goals. If it weren't for Denise S., Karen P., and all the other volunteers that helped me (us) get through the first Central AHEC EMT program, I might not be where I am today. Thank everyone greatly!! |
