Program Overview
Migrant and Seasonal Farm Worker Health Care Project:
During this one week opportunity with UCONN School of Medicine, participants shadow medical students and volunteer health care providers at local migrant farm worker camps. As a “hands on” program, students are trained to take all patient vital signs. Students assist with field clinic set-up and breakdown, intake, general health assessments, and translation assistance. During AHEC workshops, students receive medical training and college and career planning information. The weeklong sessions run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings at the farms as well as Monday and Friday mornings at Central AHEC, Inc.
St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center:
Students are offered the opportunity to see first-hand the “hard and soft” skills necessary to become part of a medical team. In the mornings, students shadow medical professionals in various departments including pathology, intensive care, cardiology, general surgery, and emergency care. Monday workshops consist of hospital tours, CPR/AED certification, college planning and career research activities and a research project. The program takes place Monday through Friday mornings for 4 weeks.
The Hospital of Central Connecticut:
Students are provided the opportunity to shadow health care providers in a variety of departments. Participants rotate to a different department each day, learning about the positions that are held in each area as well as the variety of tasks performed. Students are able to observe surgeries, speak with healthcare professionals, and participate in patient care. Students also receive CPR/AED certification and attend an AHEC workshop focused on career development and college planning. The program takes place Monday through Friday mornings for two weeks.
