Youth Health Ambassador Program
What is a Youth Health Ambassador?
Youth Health Ambassadors are youth ages 14-18, who want to explore health careers and improve the health and well-being of their community. Central AHEC, Inc. recruits, trains and places Youth Health Ambassadors in service that focuses on:
- Peer Engagement - Youth Health Ambassadors are trained to provide education and outreach that improve the health and well-being of their peers.
- Public Health - Youth Health Ambassadors learn about important public health issues and health disparities that affect their community.
- Experiential Learning - Youth Health Ambassadors use their skills and knowledge in the local community through a variety of service learning activities.
Why Become a Youth Health Ambassador?
Youth Health Ambassadors will gain skills and increase competencies to prepare for an exciting future in a health career, work alongside public health and primary care providers, educate their peers about important health issues and make a difference in their community.
What Does Youth Health Ambassador Training enable me to do?
- Educate peers and family members about health disparities and how to prevent them
- Respond in an emergency using CPR and vital signs skills
- Assist in prevention workshops, at health fairs and during outreach activities
- Make a positive impact on your community
- Learn about health professions that are right for your personality, communication and learning style
- Develop leadership and team work skills
- Meet new people like yourself, who are interested in improving community health
- Accrue service hours towards education credits (where applicable)
- Receive a certificate of participation from the Central AHEC Board of Directors
- Receive a letter of recommendation for employment opportunities or school applications
Criteria for Participation
To participate in the Central AHEC Youth Health Ambassador Program (YHAP), youth ages 14-18 needed to complete all application documents, be available during the training and service schedules, participate in service and volunteer events, become peers educators and comply with all program guidelines.
